The Human Knowome Project
Discovering Subject Matter DNA
By Victor P. Maiorana, Ph.D.

First, some words about the Human Genome Project. The Human Genome project is a program to decode human DNA. DNA is a nucleic acid that carries the genetic information in the human cell. In essence, the human genome represents an important biological attribute of mankind. It shows how the body works. The genome project is expected to revolutionize knowledge of the human body and the practice of medicine.

The Human Knowome Project is similar in concept to the Human Genome Project. Whereas the human genome represents an important ~biological~ attribute of mankind, the Knowome represents an important ~cognitive~ attribute of mankind. That attribute is that all subject matter shares a common analytic cognitive foundation [a common grammar of thought]. Said another way, all subject matter shares a common cognitive grammar; hence one can establish the “DNA” of subject matter. Accordingly, the Human Knowome Project is a program to decode, analytically, human (e.g. the world's) subject matter knowledge. It shows how the conscious mind works when it engages subject matter in an analytic way. The project uses cognitive grammar (the basis for Cogetics) as its analytic decoding tool in a way that the genome project uses DNA. With cognitive grammar any written, spoken, or rendered material can be decoded. This means that the component parts of a given subject matter topic can be identified, coded, integrated, and related to other subject matter topics. Such an analysis provides a common analytic foundation for thinking, reading/listening, writing/speaking, and problem solving.

The Knowome project is expected to revolutionize how we view subject matter and hence the practice of teaching and the act of learning. It provides powerful across-the-curriculum strategies and techniques for teachers and students at all levels in all subject matter areas.

Victor P. Maiorana is the originator of both Cognitive Grammar [Cogetics] and the Human Knowome Project. For more information on cognitive grammar, visit www.rosebrooke.com.
