The Analytic Teacher
The book is for use in teacher education, in-service, and professional development programs. It shows teachers at all levels how to address two outstanding and formidable questions in teaching and learning and in education reform:
  1. How can subject matter be engaged critically the first time that it is engaged?
  2. How can every teacher -- Elementary through Graduate - teach content and simultaneously develop their students' abilities in essential and critical thinking, reading, writing, speaking, listening, and problem solving?
The purpose of this book is to provide classroom-tested answers to these questions. Through use of Cogeticsä (kohg-etics), this book provides the means to overcome the rote-inducing and abilities-defeating limitations associated with conventional Behavior-Sequential strategy. Cognitive-Analytic Strategies and Techniques [Cogetics™] brings together:
  • the structure of language,
  • innate intelligence, and
  • subject matter
Cogetics™ develops learn-to-learn abilities in analytic and critical thinking, reading, and writing. It does this for all subject matter and for all learners - teachers and students. This book shows teachers how to prepare learner-centered analytic classroom assignments that develop in students critical understanding of subject matter while simultaneously developing essential and critical abilities in thinking, reading, writing, speaking, listening, and problem solving.

This is illustrated with examples from across the curriculum from the adverb to the editorial, from a play to music to a painting, from the Battle of Gettysburg to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in Spanish, from the addition of fractions to probability, from litmus paper to an ionic compound, from spreadsheet formulas to credit information agencies, and from Ohm's law of electricity to auto body repair.

The ideas, strategies, and techniques described in The Analytic Teacher can be used by all teachers at all school and college levels and in all areas of the curriculum. End-of-chapter questions and practice exercises allow the reader to demonstrate their understanding of and to apply Cognitive - Analytic strategies and Techniques to the development of classroom assignments.

Chapters 1 through 3 take up basic issues in teaching and learning. Chapter 1 discusses the difference between a teaching strategy and a teaching technique, addresses the poor educational consequences of the universally employed Behavior-Sequential strategy, and discusses cognitive grammar (a grammar of critical thought), the foundation for Cogetics. Chapter 2 makes the point that reading, writing, listening, and speaking cannot proceed critically unless supported by prior understanding arrived at through critical reasoning. To support and make operational this point, the chapter uses cognitive learning objectives and introduces five key analytic langauge frameworks for engaging subject matter critically. Chapter 3 discusses how to prepare and use Cognitive - Analytic classroom assignments. Chapter 4 provides eighty-six techniques for use when developing analytic classroom assignments. Chapters 5 through 10 contain one hundred and fifty-one ready-to-use, classroom-tested, learner-centered assignments that apply Cognitive Analytic strategies and Techniques to a variety of across-the-curriculum subject matter topics.
